Where are these caves?
Located in the Galamus gorges, a few kilometers from the village of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet in the Pyrénées-Orientales, this cave is part of a group of caves formed by the erosion of limestone along the river Agly. This site is of great historical importance due to the presence of the Hermitage of Galamus, a cave monastery dating from the 11th century, clinging to the rock face. The town of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet is easily accessible by car from several towns, including Perpignan and Quillan, a 40-minute drive away, and offers the possibility of reaching the beaches of the Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude in an hour ( Barcarès, Argelès-sur-Mer, Leucate, Narbonne, etc.). The towns of Narbonne, Carcassonne and Foix are more than an hour’s drive away, while Montpellier and Toulouse can be reached in two hours.

You will have the opportunity to abseil independently (17m), go through narrow passages, climb, explore and surpass yourself. As caving is also a science, your guide will explain the formation and evolution of this environment (geology, formation of stalagmites, adaptation of life, etc.). This trip is ideal for families, friends or couples looking for a real adventure to discover the underground world.
This introductory or advanced caving session lasts approximately 3 hours and takes place in the Galamus gorges.
The guide will welcome you directly to the site and provide you with all the necessary equipment for the activity.
After a short 10-minute approach walk, you will reach the entrance to the cave where the guide will explain rope progression and rappelling techniques to you.
The entrance gallery will quickly lead you to the first abseil of 17 meters, followed by another descent and a narrowing which allows you to join the rest of the network.
Then, you will climb a few walls secured by ropes and discover the multiple facets of this cavity.
You will spend approximately 2 hours in the cave accompanied by your guide, who will ensure your safety and share his knowledge of this very special environment.
After a short walk back, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the gorges and the Hermitage of Saint-Antoine from the Belvedere of the Galamus gorges.
After returning your equipment, you can chat with your guide about this shared experience.
